Whole Wheat Pizza

MAKES: serving

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup warm water

  • 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast

  • 1 1/2 tsp honey

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil (plus extra for greasing the bowl)

  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

  • 1 1/2 cups and 2 Tbsp whole wheat flour

Topping for pizza:

  • 1 cup or more (if needed) pizza sauce

  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, grated

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 cup (or more) vegetables of choice (onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, etc.)

Directions

  1. Mix the warm water, honey, and yeast together in a bowl or in a mixer with a dough hook. Cover and let rest for about 5 minutes or until the yeast begins to foam up.

  2. Add olive oil, salt, and flour. Mix until well combined.

  3. Place dough on a clean, slightly floured surface, and begin to knead. The dough will be tacky to the touch. You can also use mixer with a dough hook for this step.

  4. If you are kneading with your hands, knead for about 5 minutes or until the dough slowly bounces back after being poked.

  5. In the same bowl you mixed the dough in, slightly grease with some olive oil and add the kneaded pizza dough back in.

  6. Roll the dough around so it is slightly covered in olive oil.

  7. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let dough rise until it has doubled in size, about 2 hours.

  8. For best results when proofing the dough, place in a warmer spot of your house.

  9. When dough has doubled in size, preheat oven to 475°F degrees.

  10. Slightly grease a pizza pan or baking sheet.

  11. Remove cover from pizza dough and punch down on the dough. This will help to release any air bubbles.

  12. Using clean hands, and a slightly floured surface, begin to stretch and shape your pizza dough.

  13. It may seem tight and not "stretchy" in the beginning, this is normal. You can hold the pizza dough like a steering wheel and go clock wise around slowly stretching little by little until it forms a nice round pizza shape.

  14. Place stretched pizza dough on desired cooking pan and use fingers to spread out dough to fit the pan to your liking.

  15. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel while you prepare your toppings!

  16. Add sauce, cheese, oregano, and desired vegetables to your pizza. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until it has cooked to your liking.

  17. Remove cooked pizza from oven and let sit for a couple minutes before slicing. Enjoy!
