Ingredients

  • 1-1/3 cups warm water

  • 1-1/2 tsp active dry yeast

  • 3 Tbsp honey

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 3 Tbsp olive oil plus extra

Optional Seasonings

  • 3 Tbsp rosemary, chopped

  • Garlic cloves, chopped

  • 1 Tbsp Italian Seasoning

  • Fresh thyme


Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine water, yeast, and honey. Mix. Add flour, salt, and any desired seasonings. Mix.

  2. Slowly add 3 Tbsp oil to the flour mixture. Mix and begin to knead until well combined.

  3. Transfer dough to a clean, lightly floured surface. Knead for about 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.

  4. Coat a large bowl with a small amount of oil. Place dough in the bowl. Cover and set in a warm place for two hours to rise.

  5. When dough is ready, transfer it to a lightly floured baking sheet and preheat oven to 375° F.

  6. Punch down the dough and spread it out with your fingers until it is evenly about half-inch high.

  7. Using your fingers or a wooden spoon end, make imprints across the bread then brush the top lightly with oil.

  8. Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool. Cut into 12 equal pieces.
